for days. the storm surge has been higher than ever in the history of this region and higher than they were predicting even a short few hours ago. the great storm of 2012 is coming ashore, and we'll have you covered all night. hannity is next in a special live two-hour greta, and we're live all night on america's choice for news and information. and this is a fox news alert. sandy has made landfall along the southern new jersey coast. the storm is now a monster nor'easter, but the storm is still very powerful, very dangerous. now, the national hurricane center is reporting tonight that the storm has sustained winds of 80 miles per hour. now tonight more than 1.5 million people are without power all along the east coast and at this moment lower manhattan is in the dark. rick reichmuth is in our fox news extreme weather center tonight tracking the storm's path. rick? >> we're saying the storm has been downgraded t from a hurrice

to a post tropical storm. it's been a messaging nightmare. if you hear downgraded, don't believe it. we've got a monster nor'easter on our hands, incredible impacts happening now. the winds are extreme out of the east here across areas of long island sound. it's been pushing water all day long here in towards new york city, and that's why we now have significant flooding. i believe we have live pictures or pictures out of new york right now into lower manhattan, and water is going into the battery tunnel right now that connects lower manhattan into brooklyn, and it has now been inundated with water. getting all kinds of reports of water in the east village, in the west village, and it's slowly moving up further in towards the area. i want to show you this wind picture because we're about to see the worst of our situation. right now we have high tide, right there is the battery. that's the very lower end tip of manhattan right there. the winds now have switched to the southeast. that means we'll see the worst of the storm surge pushing in here right at high tide. we've already got water levels

two feet higher than we've ever seen. that goes back to a hurricane that was back in 1822 or 1821, so almost 200 years, that kind of a storm. it's not just right here. this is the immediate impact to the area that's under dire stress right now, all kinds of reports of major damage. the city of hoe bow ken in new jersey -- hoboken is being flooded to the south and the jersey shore took a beating today. we're talking about coastal events right now because that's the impact immediately, but i've got to tell you the next two days we've got widespread flooding across new england back towards ohio. flooding concerns everywhere interior, also high winds that are going to cause power outages, already over three million people without power tonight. we'll see more as the storm spreads inbound land t inland tt lakes, 20 to 25 foot waves on the great lakes. blizzard conditions by the time this is dn done. with he might see three or four feet of snow across the higher

elevations. everybody getting in on this across the eastern part of the country. a dire situation across the coast of the northeast. >> thank you very much. the state of new jersey took a direct hit when post tropical storm sandy came ashore. ririck leventhal is in point pleasant, new jersey with the latest conditions. rick? >> reporter: sean, conditions got progressively worse throughout the day beginning early today. the wind is just buffetting us on the third floor balcony. the ocean has met us. it's like ocean avenue is underwater. >>underwater. it's difficult to see. no lights on in pleasant beach. you might be able to see the foam an the white caps. if you look at washington avenue, the water is coming in. >> that's rick leventhal. obviously we lost him in point pleasant, new jersey. he's in the mill of it all. joining us for more of the storm and its monster impact, it's

hurricane joe. nice to b to see you. >> nice to be here. >> you said earlier on the northeast was due for this. we're right now at this hour it's the worst that it's been. tell us where we are. >> we're at the height of the storm over the next several hours. i disagree with what the hurricane center has done as far as the meterrology. this is a warm core tropical system, and you're about to see it on the south jersey shore where the southerly band comes in. i just talked to my father in summer's point. he had howling north winds gusting over hurricane force. he was calm with a pressure of 27.90 and now the wind is roaring back out of the south. that's what hurricanes do. in other words, there's a calm part, so this is moving inland now, and what has to happen over the next three to six hours is the wind continues to shift into the southeast and then eventually the south. some of the folks from atlantic city southward had mainly a north wind, so the storm surge has not been as bad as where rick is up at point pleasant, but the problem you have from

atlantic city towards roh rehoeh beach. >> the impact is going up to new england. >> yeah. >> as we look at the cone of this storm, what does it mean from baltimore, for philly, for people a little more inland? they're going to have high winds as well. >> that's right. philadelphia's wind will go calm and very light, then switch strong to the south for several hours and weaken during the day. baltimore's wind out of the northwest will go to the west and then the southwest and then to the south and calm down. we may have problems with a strong southerly wind up chesapeake bay trying to push water back up into there. i was watching what's going on in delaware bay because the northwest winds began to develop because the storm went to the north of them. it's blowing water out of delaware bay, so those folks in there are probably in better shape down the road. you've gotta understand.

this thing is spinning very quickly but it's weakening on its way in. >> for those that live in new york that may not understand, there are parts of new york actually below sea level. we're talking about battery tunnel. they're now below water. >> right. >> that means this is going to hit the subways. >> yeah. >> this is the biggest surge we've ever seen in new york city. >> that's exactly right. >> what does that mean for power outages, what does it mean for the subway system? >> the next several hours things are going to stay bad because the wind is coming directly in off the ocean, and because the wind is coming directly off the ocean, we're going to be getting a surge trying to stay up. i want to again point something out very, very different. usually like remember irene, goes by, the wind goes to the west even though it's strong to the west. it blows everything out. in this particular case, the wind keeps coming in from the southeast. >> yeah. all right. so the next thing i want to ask in terms of what -- for the people that didn't leave and heed the warning of governor cuomo in new york, governor

kristchris kristi in new jersey, there a chance their homes could be below water. >> yeah. they could be below water for quite a while. what will happen is the tide tries to go out, and the wind will keep trying to stop the tietide from going out. it's a y dangerous situation. one of the things i got real upset with and i talked to you yesterday for quite a while about the whole situation is not putting the hurricane warning in effect because people think oh, it's a big nor'easter coming. big deal. we've gone through big nor'easters before. when the hurricane warning is put in effect because you have a hurricane coming, it's a very different story. my suggestion is once you've named that storm, you leave the name and the class fakings is important. >> why is this so important? for some people in the end this may end up being an insurance issue. >> it's important to me because the foundational history of what we have to compare storms to. when we're naming storms in the middle of nowhere, you know, they might be storms that we

didn't see years ago. we say look at that, we have 20 storms. we're under global warning when in 1933 or 1935 we may have had the same thing, you know, that's one thing. but all these storms, 38, the hurricane drove 13 feet of water into providence, was that a post tropical system when it hit? we have all this stuff. it's almost as if it's meant to cause confusion. what i'm trying to do is say let's get the confusion out of there. keep the darn name on it until it's dead. >> let me ask you for people living on the coastal area seeing floods coming in tonight. right now it just hit land in new jersey. we're right in the middle of all of this. there's still going to be storm surges, flooding coming. >> right. >> it's also high tide now. >> so how long does it take to recede? >> it's going to recede several or a couple feet over the next three to six hours. the water portion or the wind pushing in will continue to try to stop the water from going out. that's the big difference between this storm and these other storms where they go by, the wind turns to the west and

you get blow out tides behind it. this time the water tries to stay in. the wind starts weakening late tonight and tomorrow but it's coming off the ocean, still retarding the water flowing back. let me say something. first of all, this storm, i want to say this, was long overdue. i talked to you about this before. my father used to call it the shortcut storm. he said he was confident he would see it before his days were numberrered and he's finally seeing it. that's the first thing. the second thing is get used to it along the east coast. maybe not this kind of track but we're in a perilous track because the atlantic is warm, the pacific is cold. it's the '50s all over again. it has nothing to do with global warming, has everything to do with nature. we'll go back to where we were in the '60s and '70s. >> so there's patterns to all of this. >> my goodness. do you realize we had 10 major hurricanes run the seaboard between '54 and 1960. six of them in '54 and '55, six hurricane hits from carolina northward. the old bac b achman turner son,

and this is a fox news alert. we are monitoring the monster storm sandy as it made landfall in new jersey just a short time ago. at this hour one and a half million people are without power all along the east coast and according to the mta, there is water now entering lower manhattan's tunnels and subway stations and we'll continue to follow the very latest developments as they head into the fox newschannel. first, in addition to the widespread damage that sandy is causing all along the east coast, its impact is being felt on the campaign trail as well. today both president obama and governor mitt romney announced that they've cancelled campaign rallies that were scheduled for both tonight and tomorrow and each of the candidates spent time today talking about the significant weather event.

>> obviously everybody is aware at this point that this is going to be a big and powerful storm, and all across the eastern seaboard i think everybody is taking the appropriate preparations. >> speaking today with the national weather service and with folks at fema as they're preparing for the landfall of a very, very dangerous hurricane. it's going to affect a lot of families. it already has, and the damage will probably be significant, and of course, a lot of people will be out of power for a long time, and so hopefully your thoughts and prayers will join with mine and people across the country as you think about those folks that are in harm's way. >> so is monster storm sandy the october surprise of 2012? joining me now to talk about the impact of the storm and much more as it turns to politics, the author of here come the black hospitals, former clinton advisor dick morris. by the way, governor romney, dick, as i read, gave his campaign bus for relief efforts for the people that are going to be impacted by the storm and

bill clinton raced out there to politicize this by saying electing romney is worse than hurricane sandy. i guess its fitting considering this has been the nastiest campaign run by president civility and company that we've ever seen. >> yeah. incredible. well, i think there will be three impacts from the storm politically, one which will help obama. any time there's an emergency like a blizzard or a flood or a tsunami or something, the president gets to play rescuer in chief, something bush failed to do with hurricane katrina. i'll bat obama dons his rain coat and his galoshes and shows up helping some wisconsin town sand bag against the lakes or something, and i think you'll see a lot of that. i think that that could prove very effective. that's a very good strategy that many, many governors and some presidents, even, have used. if romney is smart, he'll match

him sand bag for sand bag and be out there himself doing it, so that it's a break-even situation. the worst would be for romney to criticize obama and point out how political it is. what he should do is just join in the effort. >> well, apparently -- apparently he's already done that. real quick. >> the other two things are that i think it's going to depress turnout in the northeast, and that, of course, is obama's base, and people who are suffering from hardship anyway might find it especially difficult to vote, and that could have an impact. the other is that throughout the country, depths tr democrats try voting. gallup said republicans are actually in the lead in early voting at the moment, but the point is democrats worry that they'll get their base out. they line up at the nursing home or line up the union members and march them in and do early voting so they can control it. the republicans don't need to do that and probably can't do it anyway, and therefore, losing early voting will not be a

course, new jersey which was in its direct path. they've been hit very, very hard in these coastal areas, especially atlantic city heading on down to cape may in new jersey and now moving north. the storm is moving much faster than was earlier projected, now moving close to 20 miles per hour and in some cities it's going to hit -- word i is it wil move through pennsylvania and make a direct right turn and move towards upper new york and into places like albany and buffalo and syracuse and rochester. we're going to continue to track the very latest developments with this storm throughout the evening, but first we have new information tonight on the white house's coverup of the benghazi terrorist attack. fox news has now learned that 48 hours after that fatal assault, the national counterterrorism center and representatives from the fbi briefed members on capitol hill and told them there was evidence that al-qaeda or an al-qaeda affiliated group was somehow involved. well, now here's where things get sticky. according to sources, the very

next day cia director david petraeus during a capitol hill briefing reportedly said the attack was spontaneous and equated it to a flash mob, so here's the question. who in the obama administration asked general petraeus to go out and change the story? my next guest is demanding, rightly so, to know the answer. his son, ty woods, is one of the four americans killed in the benghazi attack. his son was a navy seal. joining us is charles woods with his children, jeremiah, faith, and hope. thank you all for being here. i am so sorry your son turned out to be one of the -- this is one of the most heroic stories i've ever heard in my life. he was told -- he was a mile away at the cia, a mile away from the consulate. he heard the cries for help, was told to stand down twice, and he went anyway. >> you know. it does not surprise me at all that my son would disobey direct

orders from the white house to stand down and not to help. he's trained as a navy seal, never to leave anybody behind, so it does not surprise me one bit that he would jeopardize his military career as well as his life to help save the lives of other americans. >> sean: you shared with me an e-mail you got from one of the people your son saved. >> okay. this was very touching. i received an e-mail from someone who said your son sacrifice saved my life, and i was very much touched by that. he touched many lives. he saved many lives. he was a hero long before he went to libya. >> sean: what is so frustrating to me is the president two weeks after is still saying that this is related to a movie trailer, and it wasn't true. he's still saying it had to do with the movie trailer, spontaneous. this was a terror attack. he was asked two weeks later,

and he's still blaming the movie. we found out the ambassador requested security, it was denied, and the they reduced it. then we find out that they knew from day one, they could see this in real-time. what are we to think? why would the president not tell you and your family here and the country the truth? >> why wouldn't they tell me the truth? i don't know what their motivation is, but hillary a couple days later when the bodies were flown in, she had the nerve to lie to me. i knew she wasn't telling me the truth. she's smarter than i am. she had to know the story she gave me about the film was not the triewlt, either, and she said they were going to put them in jail, she told you. >> well, the film maker. someone should be put in jail as a result of this or many people should, but i don't think it's a film maker we're talking about. >> sean: you blame the president. you blame the white house. >> let's say i don't want to point any fingers, but obviously people in the white house were watching this happen real-time.

someone in the white house or many people in the white house watched the events unfolding and knew that if they gave the order to stand down that my son would die. they watched my son die. as far as i'm concerned, there are people in the white house whoever it was that was in that room watching that video of my son dying, their cries for help, their order don't help them at all, let them die, whoever that might be, it might be numerous people, you have the blood of my son, you have the blood of an american hero on your hands. i don't know who you are, but one of these days the truth will come out. i still forgive you, but you need to stand up. >> while we're on this, i would like to say while we're obviously connected with ty by no means only him, there are many other americans there and ambassador stephens, so just --

>> sean: jeremiah, your dad told me you looked um up to your brother. >> he was obviously a good deal older than me, but growing up he was definitely someone i idolized very much. he was an embodiment of a hero from day one. he'll obviously end up going down as being known for his last act of heroism, but it really started from an earlier age than when he was 41 and in libya. >> sean: let me ask all of you here. you all have expressed a strong christian faith, and can you forgive? i don't know if i would be able to. i was telling you this in the green room, and i'm not kidding. i would be so angry. we'll start with you, girls. you're 12 and you're 15. >> yes. > >> sean: it's a lot to ask when you lose somebody that close to you. >> well, i mean, god is in control of everything. you just have to trust him every day. >> sean: you miss your brother. >> yes, we do.

as a christian, we should act how jesus would want us to act, and obviously we need to -- like jesus, he was pretty good at forgiving. >> sean: you also want answers. you want to know the truth. >> we do, yeah. >> sean: the main thing he was told to stand down. why would you say to stand down when he wanted to help and he risked his life, and why if these cries were being heard not only by your son and by others that did risk their lives, why didn't -- why were they denied help? your son died seven hours after he went in. >> you know, i can't imagine anyone with any heart that would watch a battle rage for seven hours knowing that heroes were there that were going to be slaughtered if you didn't have help sent in. we know the c-130s could have been sent there in less than an hour, jets could have been scrambled in minutes from many

different parts of the globe. the order was don't help them, let them die. you know, i'm sorry. people in the military are honorable, and when they make a vow, they're honorable enough to leave up to it. part of that vow is to defend american lives on american soil from all enemies, foreign and domestic. this compound was american soil about international law. i'm speaking as an attorney. by international law, a diplomatic compound is american soil, no matter where it's located, so we had 30 american citizens on american soil. this is no different than if it happened in l.a. or any other city. it would not take seven hours normally to scramble the jets to send a 130 if this was on american soil in california or new york or any other place, but i don't know why. why didn't they do it?

ask if that is the most pro romney of all the surveys out there. i wonder about ohio. we know that there's a romney intensity advantage. people want to vote for him more than obama voters want to vote for him, but why is it that more obama voters are voting in these -- in this early voting? >> sean: at a much lower rate. >> gallup tonight released a report from their latest survey that shows the people who actually voted already nationally, more people voted for romney than voted for obama. >> sean: he's talking about ohio. ohio numbers are slower. >> they're moving. they're cannibalizing in part their election day vote in order to move to other voters. >> sean: that's the point. >> ohio, $50 million or more is being spent on tv. every possible obama voter is going to be dragged to the polls, and a lot of people don't even know they're registered will be brought out to vote in ohio. it could be worth two points or

more. >> sean: karl rove is saying what you're saying. people that have voted in the last -- >> they'll bring them to get them out of the way. >> sean: what's also happening is there's a surge of new republican voters and early republican voting. i mean, it's now at a much higher level. the inintensity, of course, is with governor romney. >> i would tell people to be watching wisconsin even more than ohio. paul ryan is very popular there. he's known state wide. his numbers are fantastic, and that's a state that has already survived a recall. there's a good republican organization on the ground because of the scott walker vote. the man did even better in the recall. >> sean: if romney loses ohio, he's got to get colorado, new hampshire, or ohio. >> look. they already had a presidential turnout almost. it was two million people, and the republicans won by six. they have a big ground operation. the other states moving, the ones where they've not been poisoned by money, minnesota, pennsylvania, michigan are also moving because of the national polls.

right now this is moving romney, but if they don't -- you know, this could still move back. the bottom line, this storm gives obama the potential to demonstrate something that has been lacking, leadership. his numbers are dropping. whichever state you look at, however you slice it, he's dropping, his approval is going down. republican identification is going up. obama needs something, whether it be an october surprise or leadership. >> sean: to win. >> to win, yes. >> last week we said the most important number was approval. his approval went down in gallup to 47 and in rasmussen to 47. something i think is seeping in, and i wish the republicans used more of it because it's an outage. >> sean: this father, unbelievable. are you going to dial some ads when we great ads? we'll look at that and continue to monitor that and, of course, we're tracking sandy as it has now hit shore in new jersey and a lot of mid town manhattan has lost power and is underwater.
